Flowering Dogwood is a native plant found throughout Ohio and the eastern half of the United States. Black-capped chickadees are one of my favorite small birds that have huge personalities!

The Belted Kingfisher is one of the few bird species in which the female is more brightly colored than the male. They build nests in earthen banks near water, and these fish eating birds can often be seen perched along waterways.

I love Canada Geese. Many see these birds as pests, but I love their distinctive appearance and hearing their honks and wing beats as a flock passes low overhead. When I was in high school,my family was fortunate to be the home for two of these birds who had imprinted on people. It was an amazing experience, similar to the movie Fly Away Home (without the whole migrating part!!)

This mural is ~70ft long. I wanted to do something that captures the joy of water and all that a pool can bring to a community, providing opportunity for people to work, imagine, learn, exercise, and play.
This mural was completed over two weeks for The Dawes Arboretum. It is 8ft x 8ft.
Nature is an intricate web of interconnected systems, each element playing a vital role in maintaining biodiversity and a healthy environment. Much like a complex puzzle, the pieces of nature whether they be plants, animals, pollinators, or microorganisms fit together in ways that are often unseen yet essential to the whole. Every species, no matter how small, contributes to the health of the ecosystem, and the loss of any piece can cause disruptions that affect the entire system. Successful conservation embraces this complexity, recognizing that true environmental preservation requires safeguarding the full spectrum of biodiversity. The Dawes Arboretum is an example of successful conservation. With a variety of projects that cover a wide spectrum, from native plant propagation and reforestation studies to prairie restoration and monarch butterfly raising to spotted salamander migrations and nest box monitoring, the arboretum is constantly working to keep the puzzle pieces in place. It is also a place of constant learning, and so I included a puzzle piece ‘missing’ to represent the work of restoring what once was.

One of my favorite places on Earth is Yellowstone National Park. One of my favorites sights are of its inhabitants, the imposing bison. Yellowstone is the only place in the United States where bison have lived continuously since prehistoric times, surviving near extinction a little over a century ago.

Red-tailed hawks are my husband's favorite. This is a hawk that he captured while working at a hawk banding station. Banding involves placing small metal bands, like bracelets, on the birds leg to help track where a bird may go and how long it may live, among other things.
